Later in Borges's narrative, when Cruz is about to fight with Fierro, he once again hears a "startled plover" (TA, 84; EA, 56), a sound that makes him realize he had lived this moment before, when he too was an escaped criminal. This repeated phraseology makes especially evident the relationship between Cruz's earlier flight and Fierro's current escape.

In a stronger vein, Cruz's prebattle precautions as a lone fugitive are described with an extended quotation from Hernandez; however, this quotation is from the account of Fierro's own preparations before engaging Cruz and the police. Borges's narrative, as we saw above, shows Cruz removing his spurs and testing his knife on the grass; similarly, Fierro states:
